Poetry a subject which is not accepted with open hands but it has a set of its admirers. Unconventional to be a part of the main book selling scenario in India but a few publishers dare to go ahead with it.  First Step Publishing has done some justice to the dying readership of poetry.

Starting with Maitreyee Dixit , it seemed like she had it in her genes itself, Literary can be traced in her family from her great grand father Dr Hariram Mishra who was a meritorious scholar of Banaras Hindu University.
reading her one of the poems "Phantoms Who Ate My Soul"  we felt that if at 19 maitreyee can write such beautiful poems, she can go places if given proper guidance.

Phantoms Who Ate My Soul

I closed my eyes,
And let my tears fall,
And opened them again,
To wipe them and stand tall...
Many memories lay at my feet,
I couldn't fathom many of the lot,
A million broken pieces,
I had to gather, many forget me knots!
Broken and lost, pieces,
Like pieces of a shattered mirror,
Lay scattered underneath my sole,
I glanced at them, my heart quivered...
Stained, disgraceful and full of shame,
They revived the phantoms of my past,
Which always tried to engulf me,
The nightmares left me frightened, aghast...
Scars, bloodied ones,
Marked deep into my soul,
I collapsed like broken glass,
Like a stone, alone and cold..
Everyday after sometime of happiness,
I had to, unwillingly, retreat to my personal hell,
Bad decisions, humongous mistakes,
My heart fought with my head, in vain I tried to quell...
I was helpless, fragile,
And had succumbed to fake emotions and cries,
Believed to easily the fickle promises,
It was too late when the tricks I realised....
I tried to ward off those who sucked my soul,
Who proved I was worthless,
Who blamed me for staining my soul,
And made my life a godforsaken mess...
I wanted to enflame them,
I wanted to burn them, so my soul they wouldn't hack,
Atleast this could stop these phantoms,
From predictably coming back...
So, I burnt the pictures which hurt,
And stashed away my journal,
I wanted to end those painful memories,
It was their final funeral...
And I gathered composure,
And woke up to a new day,
And I looked into my soul,
The phantoms, for forever, had now gone away....!
-- Maitreyee Dixit

Be it from the beautiful weaving of words in her poem titled "Night" to the comparison of Fear, Insecurity and Pain with a Ghost in her poem titled "Ghost's Shadow", Maitreyee Dixit has potential to glue her readers to the book.

Free verses are the best that can describe Krishna Kumar's poems, Poems like "Deep Inside my eyes still lies your image" strikes a chord in your heart along with poem titled "Happiness" will make you think "How beautiful is the life of mine." In short a potpourri of mixed emotions that one can portray and easily get connected to.

I Never Miss You

It has been so long since I have seen you
I have even forgotten your face
The words you have spoken with me
The days you have spent with me
But I feel every moment as same like
The moments that you were near with me
Though you went far I never miss you
Because when I start my day
Thinking of those days in which
You were near with me, it feels like
I am living the same day once again
And in the end of my day
when I close my eyes before I sleep
I could feel yourself in me....
But all I could realise is that
I am missing the chance of missing you…
-- Krishna Kumar

A professional whose life runs in shifts has been portrayed in the beautiful lines of the poem by Mr  Sydon Pereira titled "Graveyard Shift". Just four poems was a  bit disheartening, as we were expecting more of this writer. For a newbie in writing its quite an incredible job. Poetry comes to everyone, but its only the select few who pen down their thoughts and are called poets.

Graveyard Shift

The sun’s setting; it’s time to wake,
It’s almost night; for work I’m late!
Time to freshen up, a bath to take,
The pick up’s waiting at the gate!

I reach office when everyone’s left for home,
All alone the lonely streets I roam.
The food court’s empty, that’s something new,
It’s my night shift, if you didn’t get the cue. . . .

After dinner, it’s time for work,
It’s the reason for our salary perk,
As you start a little drowsy you may feel,
Don’t say a word, your lips you have to seal.

Then work’s hectic, as it may seem,
You’re working when you’re supposed to dream!
The night goes on at a slow pace,
Varied problems you have to face!

It’s 4 in the morning, time for tea,
My eyes are burning, I can barely see. . .

After a break, ready for more,
Before you know, it’s time to go.

The sun is up, it’s getting bright,
I’m in my bed, cosy and wrapped up tight!
For some the money may seem a nifty,
But life’s hell in ‘Graveyard Shift’.
-- Sydon Periera

Turning the pages i stumbled across the acknowledgement part of Mr Rohit Shetty.
For a poet who has been writing since the age of 12 years, this is a great milestone and the readers must not skip the ‘Acknowledgements’ part at the end where he has summarised his journey of being a poet so far. It is encouraging to see how undying determination backed with consistent efforts lead an individual to success. It mentioned,

"It all started with a way to remember things for studies . . . scribbling down my unsaid feelings and emotions . . . to the best kept secret . . . to being made fun of , mocked at , and even laughed publicly at. . . . and now with the collection of five books on the shelves of many book stores worldwide."

I’d Have To Be A Thief

Your lips, your eyes, your soul
Are like a work of art,
The most creative thing of all
Is your beautiful heart.

If you were a painting,
No colours could express
The beauty deep inside you,
A rainbow, nothing less.

If you were a sculpture
The clay could hardly make
Your figure of an angel
Without one mistake.

If you were euphony
No choir could really sing
All the beautiful music
Your eyes could possibly bring.

So here I am, an artist,
With inspiration beyond belief
But to capture such rare beauty,
I’d have to be a thief.
--  Rohit Shetty.

"Simile" can best describe the above poem, beautifully sculptured poem,    Rohit has done it pretty neatly and some of the poems are able to stir some chords deep inside the heart. A few of the poems which really drew me into his thoughts are the ones dedicated to – stirring longing of a caged spirit, hope and positivity, magic of the key to my heart which can open hardest of locks and can surmount even the most difficult hurdles, virtues of smiling face and what miracles this simple gesture can bring in and many such other verses. It is said the action speaks louder than words but "Words don't hurt, The person saying them does."

In short  a good collection of poems and a must read for all poetry lovers. A Must read and a Recommended book by Book Review Forum.

Let's find out.it's about time

About the Author:  Preeti Singh is a bindaaas...born free woman who just scribbles anything that comes to her mind...whether it makes sense or not!!!! Simply because she writes from her heart...without using an ounce of her rarely awake brain!! Snuggled happily in the Lap of the beautiful Chandigarh, Preeti Singh has been a freelance writer since the last 15 years...till she decided to write a book, before her call comes towards her final journey.
Flirting With Fate is her debut crime novel. Why Crime? Well mysteries and crime have always lit the fire within her to discover the truth. And with her strong belief in Karma returning, she is flowing with words in this novel. Besides writing She love to watch movies, listening music, Playing with her dog Amber Singh, and nagging her teenage daughter.

Preeti Singh's Flirting with Fate, Started off the book with a dedication to her mother followed by a series of thanks to all the family members including the Non Believers, which had me gripped to the book from the get go.
Its so true that for writers, the world is not an easy place you get ridiculed and even laughed at. But As mentioned in the book, as "Col Hari Easwaran" once said, "the ones who cause a storm within you are your real teachers." I truly accept the above lines and have lived it myself.

Characterisation for a crime thriller is a must and the way in which the author portrayed the characters is truly commendable, you feel as if you are seeing that character in front of you while you are reading the book, be it from the part when Amma is making paratha's and murmuring, to the part when fluffy growls in hunger are the parts  which further hooks you on in reading the book.
Be it the character of Amma, or the children in the orphanage, right from Anand to Fluffy, i mean In a book / in a novel human characters are broadly highlighted, but have you ever thought about what might be the perspective of a pet dog. what does a woof mean..?? which adds to the humor of the book.

The search of Anand for love, his ways and destructive means and his Journey, are beautifully scripted.
What goes around comes around or as the tagline says Karma Returns, you will feel is so true, which is. .. Reading the book and my journey while reading it was good, and made me think about Karma, and, not to forget the emotional and the unpredictable ending, which adds many more stars to it.

In short a highly recommended book and a must read.  A gripping book which doesnt allow the reader to keep the book down until you finish reading it and when you complete reading it you feel why did it end so soon.

"Inhale the fragrance of my rose as Karma Returns."
" Karma: It will get you when you least expect it."

This hip story is about a young woman finding her true self. Will she be pleased with what she finds at the end?

To err is human, intersting title with a beautifully designed cover, easy to grab ones attention, which made me curious to read the book as well.

The plot and the story is good which has not been given justice by its poor naration, which also requires some more editing. However the best part of the book is the character Malini, full of humour and witty and not to forget "ERR".

we have heard of humans making mistakes, but have you ever heard of humans attracting problems because of these mistakes it should be criminal to be prone to commiting errors and inviting such problems. Literature and literary books are very hard to find these days but First Step Publishing has gathered some interesting talent across India. This book had a tough time assembling writers, which took them more than an years time. The catch of this book is that there are twelve writers / contributors, contributing to this venture by First Step Publishing.

First Going through the authors bio beforehand reading we were quite surprised by the line up of contributors. We found Students, Professionals, ex RJ's, Freelancers, along with published writers and entrepreneurs, which created a lot of inquisitiveness in reading the potpourri the book had to offer. Poems, Short Stories, Anecdote's, and Real Stories. Reading the book it seemed it had it all along with dash of literature and commercial writing.

“My dear Moon, I simply love and adore you”.
“You are my companion and you are my friend,
You are my support and also my strength,
You are my smile and my darling too,
Dear Moon, I simply love you.”

Be it from being inspired from the moon on being optimistic in life from "Yes You Inspire Me", to the roller-coaster of an  "An Untitled Poem" quoting

"This time i thank you to be untrue
And let me live my life happily without you..."
or be it from a typical bollywood love story turned later into marriage and a nightmare which does not allow author to dream to from "A Twisted Love Story", this book has many more poems and stories, the real face of some behind "The Smirk" they wear to the Series of bomb blast in Mumbai in "Freeze".

In short a must read for a potpourri of anything and everything.

Details of the availability of the book will be updated soon ....

"To love in such a way that even God should envy the one who deserves your love"
Following the above lines begins the Prologue, a poem, a free verse

"Many wait for someone to fall in love with
In my case; its you , only you
Why because i have fallen in love with
Everything in my life went normal
In the midst you happened
My heart got besotted with all your thought
And my soul got tangled with all your memories
Now i could realise how my life got changed in fraction of a second
I dont know what the consequences are
I just want to see your face
Talk with you, listen to you
Cuddle you, hug you, and lose myself in your arms
I yearn, to do everything you wish
I want to remain as your pride, your joy, your smile, your heart and
Your love
I like to share share all my moments and
Spend my each and every day with you, and
In the end of the day, no matter of the things that has happened
I wish to confess you that
Since from the day your fragrance came along with the love breeze
I have fallen in Love with you
Once and Forever..."

These are the lines by the upcoming writer K Krishna Kumar which defines this book in a nutshell.
Beautiful way to start a novel. Many of the young readers will connect to the book directly, the way in which the words are written are very simple and once when you start reading you get glued to it by the shear simpleness of words used by the author.

This book was recommended to us by Mr Rohit Shetty Author of 5 books titled "Silent Voices" published by Leadstart Publishing Pvt Ltd, and a series of 4 books titled "Breaking Silence" published by First Step Publishing, in the year 2011 and 2012 respectively. As he quotes "I know Mr K Krishna Kumar personally, a very hard working and a dedicated person in the things he do, which shows in his novel." further "he is also a part of an anthology titled Colours, published by First Step Publishing, in which he has an awesome collection of poems."
"I have read this book, and will recommend this book as a must read and am happy for Krishna to be listed as an Author of a Novel."

Our review for this book is as simple as the words of this book goes, a truly simple story to which one can connect very easily but the book needed more of proofing and editing. At Rs 200/- this book is value for its money. As a book reader i was a bit unhappy because the book didn't receive that much exposure as the book deserves. Its only available on Flipkart and Amazon.

10 1/2 Stories by Saurabh S Pawse | First Step Publishing

Name Of The Book:  10 1/2 Stories

Author:  Saurabh S Pawse

Publisher: First Step Publishing  www.firststepcorp.com

ISBN:  978-81-922670-5-0

Genre:  Short Stories

Date of Launch:  20th May 2012
Price: INR 150

As the name suggests Ten and Half Stories, this book has ten stories and a half story. The title and the cover will grab attention of a prospective reader, not to mention the stories as well.  Overall the content of the book is good, not to forget the vocab used, some readers might have a tough time reading as one might have to carry a dictionary for a few words. The authors style is way too analytical  and he doesn't spare the readers by the way he reaches to conclusions. The author explains everything in details and doesn't leave a scope for the readers to use their intellect.
Topics in the book include

1. If Looks Could Kill
2. Society Tea
3. The Discontented Commuter
4. Black And White
5. The Adolescent
6. Fanfare
7. The Idiosyncrasy
8. Jalpaiguri In
9. The Scarlet Letter
10. The Conman
11. Deja Vu (The Half)

Some Stories like "The Adolescent", "The Scarlet Letter", "The Conman" are some decent stories lined up along with "The Idiosyncrasy" while "If Looks could kill" is a story where in the author Meticulously defines the looks of a lady but ends in a drastic hilarious anecdote.
"Black and White" reminded me of the movie Ghajni wherein Amir Khan was suffering from the same illness of "Short Term Memory Loss"
Here readers might expect something to take with me reading the last Story but was left clueless when i turned the last page.
The book has its high and low's where in one must be prepared as in what next the author has in store.

As informed to us this book had made it to the top selling list on the e commerce website of www.indiaplaza.com
